Stance is how you stand to shoot: where your feet are, how your weight is spread and how your body lines up with the target. It is the first step of the shot cycle, and a stance you can repeat exactly gives every later step the same starting point. Most archers use a square, open or slightly closed stance.Detaily
In a square stance the feet sit on a line pointing at the target, about shoulder width apart, with the body side-on. An open stance turns the front foot and hips a little towards the target, which many archers find steadier, especially in wind, and which can give the string more clearance past the chest and bow arm. A closed stance turns them slightly away. None is right for everyone; coaches usually start beginners square and adjust from there.
Whatever the stance, repeat it. Weight is usually spread evenly, or slightly forward, with the knees relaxed rather than locked. On a range, many archers mark where their feet go so they can return to the same place after scoring.
Rulebooks set limits. Under World Archery target rules, archers shoot standing and without support, with their heads over the shooting line at full draw, unless they are persons with disabilities. Devices that raise a foot are allowed if they do not obstruct other archers and stick out no more than 2 cm past the shoe. In World Archery field and 3D rounds, archers may stand or kneel at the peg, up to about a metre away from it where that is safe, and ASA rules require archers to touch the shooting stake unless they have an approved medical exemption. Check the rulebook for your event.
On a field or 3D course the ground is rarely flat. Uphill and downhill shots, side slopes and kneeling shots all change your balance, so practise building the same upper-body shape on uneven ground.

- Should I use an open or square stance?
- Either can work. Many coaches start beginners in a square stance because it is simple to repeat, and some archers move to a slightly open stance for stability and string clearance. Try both with a coach and keep the one you can repeat exactly, shot after shot.
- How far apart should my feet be in archery?
- About shoulder width is a common starting point, with your weight spread evenly and your knees relaxed. Wider feels steadier for some archers, especially in wind, but it should not make you lean. Mark the position on the range so you can repeat it after every end.
- Can I kneel to shoot in archery?
- It depends on the event. World Archery target rules require archers to shoot standing, except persons with disabilities, while in World Archery field and 3D rounds you may stand or kneel at the peg. Other federations set their own rules, so check the rulebook for your event.
