Field archery is shot outdoors on a course of targets laid out through woods and open ground, at many different distances and often uphill or downhill. Archers walk from target to target in a group and shoot paper faces with a scoring spot in the centre. World Archery, the IFAA and the NFAA each run their own field rounds.Detaily
What sets field archery apart from target archery on a flat range is the course. Every target sits at a new distance and angle, so the archer has to aim for the slope, keep their form on uneven footing and know their sight marks across a wide spread of distances. Some rounds are shot at marked distances and some at unmarked ones.
A World Archery field round is 24 targets with three arrows at each, in two units of 12 that can be marked, unmarked or one of each. The faces are 20, 40, 60 and 80 cm, with a yellow centre scored 6 for the inner ring and 5 for the outer, then four rings scored 4 down to 1. There is no X: ties go to the most 6s, then the most 5s. Distances depend on the division and peg, up to 60 metres when marked and 55 metres when unmarked.
The NFAA field round is 28 targets with four arrows at each, from 15 to 80 yards on 20, 35, 50 and 65 cm faces. The spot scores 5, the two white rings 4 and the outer black rings 3. The X in the centre breaks ties, and in the professional divisions it earns a bonus point. NFAA field distances are marked.
The IFAA field round is also 28 targets of four arrows, scored 5, 4 and 3, but its standard face has no X, and an arrow has to cut into the higher zone to score it. In World Archery and NFAA scoring, touching the line is enough. Hunter and animal rounds use the same kind of course with different faces. Check the rulebook for your round.
For practice, a field course rewards a sight tape you trust at every distance, not just the ones you shoot most. Many 3D archers shoot field rounds for the same reason in reverse: the distance is known, so a miss points at the shot.

Časté otázky
- What is the difference between field archery and 3D archery?
- Both are shot on a walked course at changing distances. Field archery uses paper faces with rings and a centre spot, and many field rounds are shot at marked distances. 3D archery uses foam animal targets with scoring rings in the vital area, usually at distances you have to judge. NFAA field rounds, for example, are shot at marked distances.
- How far are field archery targets?
- It depends on the round. NFAA field targets run from 15 to 80 yards, and the IFAA field round covers a similar spread for adults. In World Archery field, distances depend on your division and peg colour, up to 60 metres on a marked unit and 55 metres on an unmarked one. Check the rulebook for your round.
- Do I need a special bow for field archery?
- No. Field rounds have divisions for several bow styles, including compound, recurve and barebow, so you can usually shoot the bow you have. What helps most is a set of sight marks or aiming references you trust across many distances, and practice shooting uphill and downhill.
