The string, or bowstring, connects the two limb tips and drives the arrow. Modern strings are made of many strands of low-stretch fibre with servings, tighter wraps of thread, where the arrow nock and the fingers or release sit. On a compound the string runs around the cams, alongside the cables, and often carries a peep sight and a D-loop.

Detaily

A string is built from a number of strands of fibre, laid together and finished with servings. The centre serving protects the string where the arrow nocks and where the fingers, a release or a D-loop meet it; end servings protect it where it meets the limb tips or the cams. Nocking points or a D-loop fix where the arrow sits on the string.

Rulebooks limit what a string may carry. Under World Archery target rules, a recurve string may have a centre serving, one or two nocking points and one lip or nose mark, but nothing that helps aim, such as a peephole. A barebow string may carry no lip or nose mark or other attachments. A compound string may be of any type, with a peep, a D-loop, a kisser, silencers and other attachments. Check the rulebook for your division.

Look after the string and it lasts. Wax it regularly, following the string maker's instructions, check the servings for separation and the strands for fraying, and keep it away from sharp edges. Many makers give a service life by time or shot count; replace a string sooner if it is damaged, because a string that breaks at full draw can damage the bow.

A new string needs settling in. It stretches a little over its first shots, so re-check brace height, nocking point, peep rotation and, on a compound, axle-to-axle and cam timing after the first sessions. Changing a compound string means relaxing the limbs in a bow press.

When should I replace my bow string?
Follow the maker's guidance, which is usually given by time or shot count, and replace the string sooner if you see fraying, broken strands, separating servings or a peep that won't stay square after you have re-set it. Many archers replace the string and cables together on a compound. Never shoot a string you suspect is damaged.
How do I wax a bow string?
Rub string wax along the strands, as the string maker recommends, then work it in with your fingers or a piece of leather until it warms and soaks in. A string that looks dry or fuzzy needs wax. How often depends on how much you shoot and the conditions, so check it regularly.
What is the serving on a bow string?
A serving is a tight wrap of thread over the string strands. The centre serving protects the string where the arrow nocks and where your fingers or release touch it, and end servings protect it at the limb tips or cams. A serving that separates or wears through should be repaired or the string replaced.
