The sight window is the cut-away section of the riser above the grip, where the arrow passes and the archer looks past the bow. On most modern bows it is cut past centre, so the arrow can sit on or close to the line of the string. The arrow rest, or the shelf, sits at its lower edge.Detaily
The window gives the arrow a path past the riser. On a bow cut past centre, the window's inner face is cut beyond the centre line, so the arrow can line up with the string instead of pointing off to one side. That makes center shot possible, which many archers find gives a cleaner launch and an easier tune. Many traditional bows and longbows are cut less deeply, and archers tune them with arrow spine instead.
Through the window the archer sees the target, and with a sight, the sight pin or aperture. Barebow and traditional archers look at the target past the window and arrow instead, so anything in the window that could help aim is a concern for the rules.
Under World Archery rules, a barebow must be free of marks or blemishes in the bow window area that could be used for aiming, and any such markings must be taped over. Traditional and Longbow bows must likewise be free of marks that could be used for aiming under the field and 3D rules, and where an archer shoots off the shelf, padding on the side of the window may rise no more than 1 cm above the arrow and be no thicker than 3 mm. Check the rulebook for your division.
Keep the window clear of anything that could touch the arrow or fletching. A side plate or padding that has worn or lifted, or a rest set too close to the window, can push the arrow off line and show up in the tune.
