Because everything is fixed, a round's score means the same thing wherever it is shot. A 600 in the World Archery 18 m round, 60 arrows on 40 cm faces, is a perfect score anywhere, and an NFAA 300 is a perfect indoor round in any club that runs it. That comparability is what rankings, records and awards are built on.

World Archery defines its qualification rounds by distance, face and division. The 18 m round is 60 arrows on 40 cm faces. Outdoors, recurve archers shoot 72 arrows at 70 metres on the 122 cm face, compound archers 72 arrows at 50 metres on an 80 cm face, and barebow archers 72 arrows at 50 metres on the 122 cm face. The 1440 Round, 144 arrows for a maximum of 1440, is still a World Record round and the basis of World Archery's star awards.

The NFAA and the Vegas Shoot set their own indoor rounds. The NFAA indoor round is 60 arrows at 20 yards in 12 ends of five, scored 5 to 1 for a maximum of 300. A Vegas Shoot round is 30 arrows at 20 yards in 10 ends of three, on a 40 cm face in the Championship and Flight divisions, also for a maximum of 300, and championship archers at the Vegas Shoot shoot three of them, one a day.

The word also names a stage of a tournament. At World Archery events the qualification round ranks the field, and the elimination and finals rounds that follow are head-to-head matches, with each archer's place in the bracket set by that ranking. Each stage has its own fixed format: an individual recurve match, for example, is up to five sets of three arrows.

For practice, a full round is the most honest benchmark you have. Shooting the whole round, at its distance, on its face, in its ends and time limits, gives a number you can compare week to week and against the scores you will need in competition. Short sessions of a few ends are useful, but they do not show how you hold up over 60 or 72 arrows.
