All four sizes share one geometry. The ten zones are of equal width, one twentieth of the diameter: 6.1 cm on the 122 cm face, 4 cm on the 80 cm, 3 cm on the 60 cm and 2 cm on the 40 cm. The dividing lines lie entirely inside the higher-scoring zone, and an arrow whose shaft touches a line scores the higher value. A small cross marks the centre, and on the 122 cm and 80 cm faces an inner ten, recorded as an X, helps decide ties.

Which size you shoot depends on the round. In the World Archery qualification rounds, recurve archers shoot the 122 cm face at 70 metres and barebow archers at 50 metres. Compound archers shoot 50 metres on an 80 cm face, and at international events it must be the 6-ring version, which keeps only the gold, red and light blue, so anything outside the 5 is a miss. At 18 metres the 40 cm face is used.

The 40 cm triple faces put three small centres on one sheet, in a triangle or a vertical column, each keeping only the 6 to 10 zones. An archer shoots one arrow into each spot: if two land in the same spot, only the lower one scores. There are separate recurve and compound versions, the 40 cm-R with a 4 cm ten and the 40 cm-C with a 2 cm ten, because compound archers score only the inner ring as 10 and the rest of the gold as 9. Triple faces are required at international events; elsewhere the organiser may allow single faces.

At World Archery competitions only faces from manufacturers licensed by World Archery may be used, and every face in a category must be the same colour and material. For practice, a printed face of the right size works well, as long as it prints at true scale: a 40 cm face that comes out at 38 cm shrinks every ring and makes your practice scores harder to compare with competition.
