ASA runs a national tournament series (Pro/Am circuit and qualifier events) plus state-level affiliate matches. Classes range from Junior Eagle to the Pro classes, separated by bow type, sight rules, age and distance, and each class is designated known or unknown distance. ASA sets a maximum distance for each class rather than a minimum: 15 yards for Junior Eagle, 45 for classes such as Hunter 45 and Open 45, and 50 for the Pro and Known 50 classes. A Pro/Am round is 20 targets, with one arrow at each.

Scoring is by zone hit: 12, 10, 8 for the vital area and 5 for the body silhouette. A miss off the silhouette scores zero. ASA's 2018 scoring diagram shows two 12-rings inside the 10, diagonally opposite each other and each touching the inside of the 10-ring. The lower 12 is in play for every shooter, and any shooter may instead announce the upper 12 before the shot; from then on, the lower 12 scores only 10 on that target. An uncalled arrow in the upper 12 scores 10, because it sits inside the 10-ring. The "called" mechanic adds a tactical wager to each shot. For training, scaled ASA practice targets reproduce the zone layout at a shorter distance using a calibrated print scale, so the practice distance still means something. Our prints place the rings as ASA's scoring diagram and photo show them: the 12s diagonally opposite inside the 10, and the 14 in the upper corner of the 8, clear of the 10. Neither image shows an animal, so we put the upper 12 toward the head and the 14 toward the rear. ASA publishes no ring dimensions, so the ring sizes are manufacturer figures.
